I was 7 yrs. old at the time, but remember it well. The "Midnight Ride" back across the Powder Mill Ferry was a joyous one. Multiple factors made this team special. The chemistry among them, they cared about one another on and off the court, all lived in town so none had to skip after-school practices to catch the school bus home, in fact the team bus for out of town games left from the drugstore that year, and the coach N.P. McDaniel was brilliant.

Earlier that year, this team of '59 had lost a close regular season game to Centerville. In this Regional Finals game played AT Centerville Coach McDaniel devised a master-stroke of genius. Our guys guarded their man by sticking their noses 1/2 inch from their opponent all over the court whether they had the ball or not. Winona NEVER called a single timeout and when Centerville called timeout our guys didn't go to the huddle, instead they stalked the Centerville huddle and as soon as they broke they were right back in their face. During halftime Winona didn't go to the dressing room, but waited on the court for Centerville to return and as soon as they did were right back nose to nose with them. It finally wore 'em down.

The trip to State in Cape Girardeau was a memorable one. Townspeople volunteered to drive the players in their automobiles to avoid the long and tiring bus ride. The cheerleaders decorated all the cars with signs and streamers. The procession was about 15 cars long and before leaving town passed by the elementary school where all the students had been turned out to cheer. I of course went to the game and I remember dad telling me to hunker down in the back floorboard so my classmates wouldn't see me as we slowly drove around the elementary school circle.

Alice Matilda Barnes Akers (07 Feb 1890 - 03 Mar 1947) & Allen Martin Akers (23 Oct 1888 - 12 Mar 1969) Married 25 Dec 1908 at Shannon Co MO She was the daughter of Moses G. Harry L. and Marie A. Lloyd, Wedding Day 1906 Contributed by Jackson Lloyd to the Facebook Page 'Shannon County Genealogy'	Samuel & Frances Piatt Samuel and Frances donated 5 acres of land, at Round Springs, Shannon County, MO., for the LONE PINE-PIATT CEMETERY, in 1918. This family cemetery has been well kept over the years, and has 100 + or - graves. ----------------------------------------------- Samuel was raised in Crawford County, Missouri, for most of his childhood near his father's extended family. His mother died between 1866 and 1869 at which time Samuel gained a step-mother, MARY ANN HONEYCUTT, who provided Samuel with seven half-siblings. Since he was only eight to eleven years old when his mother died, it can be assumed that he actually had more of a relationship with Mary Ann, than with his mother. Some researchers list Samuel's birth place as Texas County, Missouri. Unless the family moved there and then back to Crawford county, Missouri, before the 1860 census--I think perhaps that is an assumption on someone's part. And his death certificate lists his place of birth as Crawford County, Missouri. Alternatively, perhaps Rachel did go to Texas County to stay with a relative or friend and to give birth there ? The family was in Texas County, Missouri {or at least that is where James and Mary Ann were married in 1869} but moved by 1870 to Shannon County, Missouri.Samuel was married October 24, 1876, in Dent County, Missouri to, FRANCES L. STEWART who was born 15 April 1859 {or 1860} to Marion M. and Polly Welch Stewart and who died 12 July 1942. She is buried with Samuel P. in the Lone Pine-Piatt Cemetery, Shannon County, MO. Notice the location of the diamond about where the street at the post office currently is located. That's highway 19 in the front.
