CAROLLEE HERNDON NASH
20 Oct 1930 - 11 Sep 2016
|
|
Carollee Ethel Herndon Nash was born on October 20, 1930 to James Miller
Herndon and Ethel Mildred Horton Herndon at Hume, MO. She went to her
heavenly home on September 11, 2016 in Mountain View, MO. Carollee was
raised in Hume with her two younger brothers Rodger and Joe until the
family moved to Butler, MO when she was in high school. After she had
attended Butler High School for only one and half years, she was voted
the most popular young lady by the student body and crowned Queen. She
graduated in 1948. Carollee was a PBX (switchboard) operator by
profession and worked in Kansas City, MO, San Francisco, and at
Interstate Electronics in Anaheim, CA where she met Donald Nash. She and
Don married in 1960 and she brought her son Mark Cross with her into
this union. Don officially adopted Mark and he also became a “Nash”.
Carollee and Don had one child, Chris. Carollee and Don lived on farms
in three different locations where they planted and raised alfalfa, ran
a few cows, and a horse or two for the kids; Lucerne Valley, CA;
Barstow, TX; and finally at the Delaware Community in Shannon County,
MO. Carollee dearly loved her children and grandchildren. She was
especially wonderful with small children and when needed also helped
babysit her friends’ grandchildren, Emily and Makenna. Her
grandchildren’s favorite memories are on Delaware; the big yard, the big
house, walks to the creek, blackberry picking, and lots of fun. She was
baptized as an infant at the United Methodist Church in Hume and
accepted Jesus as her savior as an adult and was then baptized at the
First Baptist Church in Lucerne Valley. She participated in many church
activities throughout her life; led youth groups for her children and
grandchildren, attended church camp as a sponsor for her children and
grandchildren, taught Sunday School, led a nursing home bible study,
played the piano and organ for services, and hosted women’s parties at
her home. She loved to host dinners in her home, she treated each
occasion like an “event.” She set a beautiful table with her Candlewick
or Cape Cod dishes, always a centerpiece and candles. The food was also
beautiful and delicious; she had a keen eye when it came to presentation
and excellent cooking skills. A dinner at Carollee’s table was
definitely an event. Carollee used real butter at her table, chocolate
was usually close by and she loved the refreshing sugary taste of
peppermint. She was preceded in death by her parents, her aunts and
uncles, her husband Don, her sister-in-law Margaret Herndon, her nephew
Torey Herndon, and her son Mark Nash. She is survived by her daughter
Chris Lee Nash Conway and husband Brad; brothers Rodger Herndon, and Joe
Herndon and wife Sonja; very special cousin Harriet Bogan;
daughter-in-law Sharon Nash; four grandchildren Jennifer Lee Blankenship
and husband Nick, Eric Nash, Matthew Conway and wife Jacy, Rachel Kinman
and husband Frankie; four great grandchildren Kenzlee Blankenship, Ellie
Kinman, Luke Conway, and Conner Kinman; and many nieces, nephews,
cousins, and friends. Carollee loved music and passed this love along to
her children and grandchildren. When she played the piano and sang, the
family sang along. She knew many songs but The Old Rugged Cross must
have been her favorite. After she went to live at Mountain View Health
Care the staff told us they could hear her singing that song at night
and her voice carrying into the hallways. The last time she was at the
hospital and could no longer speak or communicate more than by her
expressions, she was humming The Old Rugged Cross. It is no wonder she
clung to this song, these are the words in the Refrain “So I’ll cherish
the old rugged cross, Till my trophies at last I lay down; I will cling
to the old rugged cross, And exchange it some day for a crown”.
Interment at Delaware/New Harmony Cemetery.

MARY ANN HOWELL IRELAND NETTLES
15 Sep 1856 - 06 Nov 1905
|
|
Mary Ann Howell Ireland Nettles -
In Memoriam - To those who die in Christ there is no death, but rather an
exchange of happier conditions. For many years, Mary Ann, beloved wife of H.L.
Nettles, of
Jackson township,
suffered with distressing and painful ailments finally culminating in that dread
disease consumption. On the morning of the 6th inst., in her full powers of mind
and with a gentle resignation, she yielded up her spirit and passed to the great
beyond. She died with a diadem upon her brow, for she had obeyed from her heart
that form of doctrine delivered to the saints and hers was the triumphs of the
living faith. Deceased was a daughter of the late Simeon Howell, so favorably
known by the older citizens, and was born Sept. 15, 1856. At an early age she
was joined in wedlock to her first lover, an estimable young man, John Ireland,
who is an encounter with Henry Starks, of Texas County, met an untimely death a
short while after their marriage. To this union a daughter was born, who is now
the wife of Emmett Scanton, a deserving and highly respected citizen of Pratt,
Kansas. Mrs. Ireland remained a widow until 1882 when she again married, this
time to H.L. Nettles, and from thence forth together they trod life's highway
until she was called hence, at the date above given. Four children were born to
them, the first a daughter, died in infancy. Three still live to bless and cheer
their grief stricken father in his sad bereavement and declining years. Mrs.
Nettles was a devoted member of the Christian Church, an obedient daughter of
her parents, she also loved her brothers and sisters, was kind and obliging to
her friends, but her husband and children were her earthly all in all. Truly she
was an exemplary woman, and those who are grieved at her death can console
themselves with the thought that their loss is her eternal gain. She obeyed the
Gospel, fought a good fight, finished her course, kept the faith. She has gone
to meet her reward. ~ The Current Wave-November 30, 1905.

BIRDIE STRAIN NICHOLS
23 Mar 1893 - 08 Mar 1973
|
|
Birdie Nichols as I knew her in her attitude toward life:
Psalms 118:24: 'This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be
glad in it.' --John Thomas Birdie STRAIN NICHOLS was born March 23, 1893 at
Alley, Mo., the daughter of John STRAIN and Amanda WILKINS. She was the only
sister to Rueben Frank, Robert and Melford, who died at an early age. Birdie was
married to Charley J. NICHOLS July 12, 1911. To this union nine children were
born. Birdie also raised a stepson Odis, until his death and she was the only
Mom that four of her grandchildren knew, namely, Edith Adele ANDERSON, Bucky
NICHOLS, Janice POWELL and Judy FERGUSON. Birdie M. NICHOLS passed from this
life Thursday, Mar. 8, 1973 at the age of 79 years, 11 months and 15 days. She
was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charley, sons Odis, Cecil,
Danny, Freeman and Wilbur ‘Buck’ and daughter Stacy L. KNIGHT; 3 grandsons, Don
KNIGHT, Danny COLLYOTT and Cecil NICHOLS. Birdie will be sadly missed by her
surviving children, Edith HAYCRAFT and Shannon COLLYOTT, of Rockford, Ill., Adam
NICHOLS of Loyal, WI, and Charles NICHOLS of the home; 14 grandchildren and 23
great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins and a host of friends.
Birdie was baptized early in life and accepted Christ as her Savior and joined
the Catholic Church and was faithful to God until her death. She raised her
children with the understanding that God is Almighty and that we should do as He
commands. Services were held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at Duncan Funeral
Chapel at Eminence with Rev. John Thomas and Bro. John Ball officiating.
Interment was in
New Eminence Cemetery.
Birdie suffered through many agonies through her life, losing her children and
grandchildren, whom she loved dearly, and suffering physically the last few
years, but she always came through with a smile, not quite as cheery or as
bright as before, but with strength and determination as only she had with only
a touch of the sadness she felt in her eyes. She was always there when needed
for all the big and little hurts, all the wants and all the needs that go with
raising a large family, ready to wipe tears, bandage a finger or give a well
deserved swat when needed. There were many ways to eulogize a woman like her,
but the most fitting to describe her as she was to us who are left behind is
‘Mom’.

Heaven by her Aunt Tricia and Uncle Robert Murphy. God had a plan for Hannah the
day she was born. Everyone she met she touched in one way or another. She was a
true inspiration that anyone who ever met, has a great memory in their hearts
for her, some more than others. Hannah was a tomboy at heart, Marshall and Patty
instilled in her to do what she loved and because she was a girl was no
boundary. Her ambition in new things was wonderful. If she seen it, she wanted
to learn it, it didn't matter what it was. If we could see life as Hannah did it
would be with great challenges and she was ready to do them all. God was always
by her side and that was never a question to anyone. Her short time here on this
earth is a lesson to us all. Everyday Hannah lived her life to the fullest. From
the moment she woke up until the time she finally fell asleep she was on the go.
As it is that way for her now in Heaven. Her precious smile and those sparkling
eyes will forever be with us all. She will see us again someday. God has a plan.

Newspaper article from St. Louis - SUDDEN
DEATH - James F. NORTON of Eminence MO
Stricken at Moser’s Hotel Yesterday Morning – Death came suddenly to James F.
NORTON of Eminence MO, as he sat in the office of Moser’s Hotel, shortly after 7
o’clock yesterday morning, waiting for breakfast to be served. Mr. Norton raised
his arms above his head as though stretching them to their full length, gasped
once or twice, and slid from his seat to the floor, a corpse. Mr. Norton, who is
the leading merchant at Eminence, came to St. Louis, accompanied by his nephew,
C. S. NORTON, for the purpose of purchasing a stock of goods for his store. He
spent Wednesday in looking over the stocks of various wholesale houses, and went
to the theater in the evening. Wednesday night he lodged at the Mona House on
Sixth Street, and arose at his accustomed hour at 6 o’clock yesterday morning,
complaining of a slight backache. Accompanied by his nephew, who occupied the
same room with him at the Mona House, Mr. Norton walked to the Moser for
breakfast. The meal had not been prepared, and it was while waiting for it that
death came. There was no struggle or sign of pain. The man’s head fell forward
until his chin rested upon his breast, and a pallor spread over his face. C. S.
NORTON, who was seated beside the stricken man, inquired ‘Are you sick, Uncle?’
There was no answer and the body began to slide to the floor. The nephew made an
attempt to support it. He called for help, and several bystanders aided him in
supporting the body. A messenger was sent for Dr. J. D. IRWIN, who has an office
at Eighth and Pine streets, and an ambulance was telephoned for. In the meantime
the body was carried out into the street, as the people in the hotel thought Mr.
Norton had fainted and needed fresh air to revive him. Dr. Irwin arrived in a
few minutes and stated that the man was dead. A minute later the ambulance came
and the body was taken to the Dispensary and then to the Morgue. A post-mortem
examination showed the cause of death to be heart failure. Mr. Norton was a
prominent man in the section of the state from which he hailed. Aside from being
the leading merchant at Eminence, he owned a large farm in Shannon County, and
was considered quite well-to-do. He was related to ex-Congressman Richard
NORTON, and was active in politics. Mr. Norton served two terms as Sheriff of
Shannon County, and was County Collector for one term. He has been a conspicuous
figure at all of the Democratic gatherings in the state for the last 15 years.
Mr. Norton was 55 years of age, and leaves a wife and five children living in
Eminence. He was a brother of D. C. NORTON of Eminence, who gained some
notoriety by preferring charges of larceny against Jefferson D. STORTS. Mr.
Norton was an Odd Fellow and a Mason. The body will be taken to Eminence today
for preparation for burial. [Burial at

loved to do—fishing the Gulf. His children were the greatest joy of his
life and he loved spending time with them. He was so proud of them, and
anybody who knew him knew all about his kids. Jeff was a free spirit,
and he lived his life every day to the fullest. He loved spending his
spare time hunting, fishing, and just enjoying the outdoors. He was a
very happy and outgoing person, and he never met a stranger. He was
never a materialistic person, and he would give the shirt off his back
to anyone. He loved life, and he was always going on some sort of an
adventure. He was loved by all, and will be greatly missed.

JOHN
PRESTON NORTON
'J.P.'
31 Mar 1846 - 02 Jan 1934
|
|
John Preston Norton, son of David NORTON and Emily DAVIDSON NORTON, was born March
31, 1846 and died January 2, 1934. He was married first to Mary Elizabeth KINNARD, daughter of James
and Sarah Emeline SHIELDS KINNARD, November 19, 1868, in Carter County, Missouri.
John and Mary had nine children. He was married second to Electa Evelyn LAXTON,
daughter of Jesse and Nancy DUNCAN LAXTON, September 1, 1892 in Shannon County,
Missouri at the home of the bride. Electa was born 16 August 1862 and died 25
February 1940. John and Electa had two children. John P. NORTON and Mary
Elizabeth NORTON are both buried in Clark Cemetery, near Low Wassie MO. Electa
Evelyn NORTON is buried in
Bethany Chapel Cemetery, near Eminence, MO in the
LAXTON family plot. John grew up in the household of Mrs. Mary Ann GRIFFEN, in
Carter County, Missouri, west of Van Buren. Her house stood north of present day
US Hwy 60, near the junction of Missouri Hwy ‘C’. The old house is no longer
standing, but the chimney and fireplace was used in an old cabin rebuilt on the
courthouse lawn in Van Buren, MO. This cabin is presently used as an information
center for tourists. The family moved to Shannon County before 1880 and settled
on a farm located on Sycamore Creek, about three miles northeast of Winona. Off
‘H’ Hwy. John was a farmer, a Judge of the Shannon County Court, a charter
member of the Winona Masonic Lodge. He had served in the Confederate Army, Co
‘B’, 3rd Missouri Volunteer Cavalry, enlisting at Van Buren, MO, 10 June 1864.
He enjoyed the reputation for honesty, integrity and hospitality, unsurpassed in
the area.
- SHANNON COUNTY DEMOCRAT, APRIL 20, 1917 -- Local Items Jno.
P. NORTON and wife were passengers on last Saturday en route to Dry Valley in
Carter County on the sad mission of attending the funeral of ‘Aunt’ Mary Ann
GRIFFEN, and old pioneer and highly respected citizen of this area, whose death
occurred the day previously at the advanced age of 89 and whose death occurred
from the infirmities of old age. Mr. NORTON made his home for a considerable
length of time in the family of Mrs. GRIFFEN.
- THE CURRENT WAVE - JOHN
P. NORTON OF WINONA Tuesday morning marked the passing of one of Shannon
County's most pioneer citizens, John P. NORTON, living some three miles
northeast of Winona. It was on this same farm the deceased settled more than 60
years ago, reared his family of 6 sons and 3 daughters, all of whom survive but
one son and one daughter; and the mother of the original household unto whom 8
of the children were born. Early history of Shannon County records the name of
John P. NORTON and his brothers, one of which was sheriff-collector and John P.
as Judge, back in the 80s when the former offices were combined, and there was
only one Judge. As a member of the Masonic Lodge of the old type, Mr. NORTON
traveled to Van Buren some 25 to 30 miles by horse to be in attendance, later
helping to form the Winona Lodge where he attended regularly up until his
advanced age prevented. Short funeral services were conducted Wednesday
afternoon from the home by the Winona Lodge followed by procession to the Clark
Cemetery near Low Wassie where interment was made in the family plot, conducted
by the Masonic Order. A large congregation of relatives and friends paid their
last tribute to the deceased in condolence to the bereaved widow, sons and
daughters who were all present.
- SHANNON COUNTY DEMOCRAT
-- JUDGE JOHN
P. NORTON PASSES AWAY Jno. P. NORTON, 88 years of age, and familiarly known to
his host of friends as ‘Judge’ and ‘Uncle John’ passed away at his home on
Sycamore, about the middle of the forenoon on Tuesday of this week. Having been
in very poor health during several years Mr. NORTON continually grew weaker and
suffered his first serious affliction in October of 1932 when he had a light
stroke. From that time he had poor use of his organs of speech and grew more
feeble. On Saturday before his passing he became noticeably weaker and continued
to a very low state until the death angel claimed him. Mr. NORTON is the last of
a large family of brothers and sisters, all of whom were of considerable
prominence in this county since early manhood. He was a wonderfully fine
gentleman of the hospitable type whose residence graced the Ozark region, and
those whose home and assistance were always ready for the needy. He served
Shannon County as Judge of the county court several terms, continually bearing
the reputation of a faithful, conscientious and efficient servant of the
populace. As one of the most active and worthy members of the Masonic Order he
is remembered by his remaining brothers. During his days of activity no weather
was ever too rough nor the distance too great for him to attend the meetings of
lodge or go to the aid of a brother.

JOHN
WILLIAM NORTON
'BILL'
17 Jan 1884 - 13 May 1948
|
|
John William Norton, son of John Preston NORTON and Mary Elizabeth KINNARD
NORTON, was born January 17, 1884, near Winona MO, and departed this life on May
13, 1948, at the age of 64 years, 3 months and 26 days. As a young man, ‘Bill’,
as he was known by his family and friends, assisted his father on the farm,
worked in and near Winona and Eminence in the mercantile business, then about 24
years ago went into business for himself and made a successful business man. He
leaves to mourn his passing two sisters, Mrs. M. M. JONES of Eminence MO, and
Mrs. Eliza MCADAMS of Winona MO; two brothers, G. A. NORTON of Springfield MO,
and J. H. NORTON of Winona MO; fourteen nieces, four nephews and other
relatives, plus scores and scores of friends. Bill was recognized by all who
knew him for his lovable disposition and his kindness and generosity to all. He
was especially kind to children. To know him was to love him. His deeds of
charity and good will were all done unobtrusively. Bill was never affiliated
with any particular church, but at heart was a true Christian. To have known
Bill intimately, each of his movements and gestures bore a characteristic stamp.
Even the garments he wore were distinctive of his life and individuality; they
suggested the familiar face, filled out with the well known form. This, we say,
belonged to him. The absence of his lofty and kindly traditions will affect the
whole community – so may God be discerned in Humanity; so may Christ be seen in
His Church. [Burial

P. NORTON, age 45 years. Deceased has been a sufferer for several years with
that dread disease, consumption, and for the last six months confined to her bed
the most of the time, and suffered much before death came to her release. We
were personally acquainted with Mrs. NORTON, nee KINNARD, having known her since
the year 1866, and although she was not a professor of religion she was always
considered by those who knew her as a good girl and an exemplary wife. She was
well beliked by her neighbors. It is sad to part from those that are dear to us,
and leaves sorrows deep and lasting in true and faithful hearts, but death is
unavoidable, and we must reconcile ourselves to the inevitable. Mrs. NORTON
