HERBERT JOHN DAVIS
'HERB'

07 Mar 1911 - 12 Sep 1974

Herbert John Davis was born to Rev. Jesse B. and Ara Columbia Davis on March 7, 1911 at Montier, Missouri. He completed elementary education in a one-room school at Hurricane Creek, and graduated from Winona High School in 1930. He married Dorothy Lee Bell on May 18, 1939 at Greer, Missouri. Three children were born to this union, Sue, Joe, and Jim. Herb Davis began his career with the Missouri Department of Conservation as a refuge manager at the Big Springs Refuge near Van Buren in 1939, two years after a vote of the people created the department. The emphasis in the early years of the game division was to increase Missouri?s deer and game animal populations. During his 35-year career, Herb served at various wildlife refuges in the Ozark region, including Big Springs, Sam A. Baker, Irish Wilderness, Carmen Springs, and Peck Ranch. While refuge manager at Sam A. Baker Park in Ripley County, Herb was drafted into the U.S. Army in March of 1944. After completing basic infantry training, he was assigned to the 102nd Infantry Division, Ozark Division. Herb?s combat experience during the Battle of the Bulge earned him two bronze stars. After serving his country in World War II, Herb returned to employment with the Department of Conservation. In 1950, biologists thought wild turkeys were possibly headed for extinction in Missouri. The department purchased a 23,000 acre tract of land containing one of the last remnants of wild turkeys in the state. Herb was recruited to oversee the construction and maintenance of the area. Under his watch, the turkey population increased beyond anyone?s expectation in a few years. Working with others, Herb modified a cannon net, used to capture geese, to trap turkeys. With an increased turkey population and a method of trapping birds, a program to restock turkeys from Peck Ranch to other suitable areas in the state was started. Although no single individual can take credit for Missouri's wild turkey success story, it is indisputable that Herb Davis made outstanding and significant contributions to the restoration of deer and wild turkey throughout the state. Thanks in no small part to his efforts, there is today a spring and fall turkey season in all of Missouri's 114 counties. Moreover, Missouri is ranked as one of the top turkey and deer hunting states in the nation. Herb died at the age of 63, while an active employee with the Department of Conservation. He left a "wildlife legacy" for all Missourians.

On January 30, 1937, he was united in marriage to Thelma Douglass and to this union were born one son, Robert Douglas Davis, and two daughters, Wilma Lee Lott and Phyllis Jean Allen. Thelma Beatrice Douglass Davis - Born August 5, 1912, in a log cabin on Hurricane Creek in Oregon County, Missouri. Thelma was the first child of Cecil Sebastian and Flora Brawley Douglass. She passed away August 27, 2014, in Springfield, Missouri at the age of 102. Thelma attended Ross and Bland Elementary Schools and graduated from Alton Missouri High School with the class of 1934. For two years following graduation, she taught in the Oregon County one-room rural schools of Ross and Surprise. Thelma was united in marriage to Robert Lee Davis on January 30, 1937, and to this union three children were born; Wilma Lee, Robert Douglass, and Phyllis Jean. Thelma and Robert, along with her sister Berniece and brother-in-law Goldman, left Missouri in June of 1937 for a job in Frazier, Colorado. After a short time, they drove log trucks to Flagstaff, Arizona, camping nights in extremely rugged and remote territory. Thelma considered watching large herds of wild horses running across the desert as the highlight of the trip. After a year in Arizona, they returned to Missouri and began a long farming career in Oregon and Shannon counties. After Thelma’s three children were born she turned down her passionate dream of attending college, opting instead to stay on the farm to garden, cook for family and hired hands, be a companion to Robert, and raise her children. In 1952, Thelma became a 4-H leader in Oregon County. Later she was instrumental in forming a 4-H club in the Vann Community of Shannon County, which later became the Winona Wranglers 4-H Club. Under her leadership, many children were taught to cook and sew. Some of her students took demonstrations to the state level of 4-H competitions. Between 1956-1962, Thelma and Robert were honored for their work as farmers. Including, being named Missouri State Fair’s “Farm Family of the Year” in 1959. They also received a ‘Certificate of Award for Record Keeping’ and a ‘Certificate of Award for Balanced Farming – Forestry Management” from the University of Missouri. In 1962, Thelma and Robert were added to the Leader’s Honor Roll of the University of Missouri’s Extension Division for their work in rural extension programs. Thelma accepted Christ as her savior at the age of 20 and for the next 82 years was an active member of New Liberty, Alton, Winona, and Campbell United Methodist Churches in Missouri. After Robert’s death in 1978, Thelma traveled to the states of Arizona, Washington, California, Georgia, Virginia, Texas, Louisiana, Oregon, Kentucky, and Washington D.C. to visit family and experience the wonder of the country she loved. She was also active in the Winona Senior Citizen’s Group; serving as President, Vice-President, and Secretary. At age 93, Thelma moved to Rogersville Care Place where she continued blooming where she was planted. OBITUARY: Elsa Elvira Swiney Day, the fourth child of Ed Swiney and Lou Ceba (Bay) Swiney, was born August 14, 1913 at Little Sinking Creek in Dent County, Bunker, Missouri and she entered into rest in Rolla, Missouri on August 17, 2010 at the age of 97 years and three days. On December 31, 1932, in Centerville, Missouri, Elsa Elvira Swiney was united in marriage to Arthur Richard Day and to their union one son was born.  Arthur preceded her in death on November 20, 1968.  Survivors include her son, Gene Day and wife, Lois, Bunker, Missouri; brother, Kenny Swiney and wife, Belinda, Bunker, Missouri; sisters, Lily Dale Sutton, Salem, Missouri; Faye Crocker, Poplar Bluff, Missouri; sister-in-law, Emily Swiney, St. Louis, Missouri; grandchildren, Art Day, Bunker, Missouri and Laura Whelan and husband, Tom, Salem, Missouri; great-grandchildren, T.J. Young, Cory Young, Leah Whelan and Jennifer Smith; a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members and very special friends, Gary and Faye Gant. Preceding her in death were her parents, Ed and Lou Swiney; one grandson, Eric James Day; brothers, Kirby, Albert, Ed and Louis Swiney; sisters, Thelma Swiney and Elizabeth Sutton.  It is next to impossible to sum up Elsa’s life in a few paragraphs. Elsa lived on the family farm with her son Gene and grandson, Art. Until her health no longer permitted, she lived in her home, cooked her meals, did her own grocery shopping, and baked a pie or two when she decided a homemade peach pie would be a fine ending to a meal.  And she did all of this with her walker at her side because she said it was a part of her, and she used it for everything, not just to walk.    Her faith was very important to her and she was a Charter Member of the Greeley United Baptist Church and a Charter Member of the O.E.S. Chapter 19.  She was also the oldest member. A few years ago a local newspaper did an article on Elsa and the first thing she mentioned was her wonderful neighbor, Faye Gant. “She is sweeter than sugar ever thought about being.  She takes me to the doctor, and she never leaves my side.  She is right there with me every minute.  Her husband, Gary, is awful good to me too.  They both treat me like a princess.”  Here are a few more of her remarks. “There is always a way to get something done if you want to do it, sometimes it just takes a little figuring out.”  “I love the outdoors.  I can remember working in the hay fields, and I always had big gardens and canned everything.  I was raised on Sinking Creek near Bunker.  I milked 12 cows a day and sold cream and butter and eggs.”  “I guess some folds would think I had a hard life because I worked from early morning to dusk, but I think I had a wonderful life.  I have memories that I cherish.  I can still see some things very clearly in my mind’s eye.  Early morning is a good time to store up pictures in your mind.”  Elsa will be deeply missed by her family and everyone who knew and loved her. Funeral service for Elsa Elvira Day will be at 12:00 noon on Saturday, August 21, 2010 at the Salem Chapel of the James & Gahr Mortuary with Pastor Ronnie Parker officiating.  Visitation for family and friends will be from 10:00 A.M. until time of service at 12:00.  Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery, Salem, Missouri.   Memorials are suggested to the Swiney Cemetery, Bunker, Missouri.

ALEXANDER JACKSON PERRY DEATHERAGE

The Current Wave – January 25, 1906

A PIONEER GONE

A. J. P. Deatherage, who passed over the mystic river on the 12th inst., was the oldest resident of Shannon County. He was born in Kentucky Dec. 21, 1823, and at the date of his death had reached the ripe old age of 82 years and 22 days.

When he was 5 years old his parents moved from Kentucky to Illinois and in 1833 came to this part of Missouri and settled on Current River at the place now owned and occupied by W. J. Randolph. Thus it will be seen that at the early age of ten years he first became acquainted with old Shannon’s ‘rocks and rills, her woods and templed hills,’ and being a true lover of the beauties of nature, and highly gratified with the customs and hospitality of the plain people with whom his lot was cast, he concluded to make this county his future home and for weal or woe to here abide as one of its citizens the remainder of his life and carrying his resolution into effect he remained with us as one of our people for a period of 72 years.

He was  married three times. The first time to a Miss McCormac, shortly after attaining his majority. She died within fifteen months afterward; he then married Miss Sallie Allen, who passed away in the year 1873, and the third time to Mrs. Elizabeth Grimes in October 1874.  He was the father of fifteen children, one by his first wife, ten by his second and four by his last; of this number six are still living. In 1856 he first entered the political field and was elected Sheriff and Collector; was re-elected to the same position in 1858, and so well did he serve his constituency that he was unanimously chosen as County Treasurer in the year 1860. Shortly after his election the country was convulsed in Civil War and espousing the cause of the Confederacy he went forth as a private soldier to battle for its cause. He took part in the battles of Wilson Creek and Lexington and it was told by those who participated in the engagements that he was a gallant and brave soldier.

At the close of the war when our citizens returned again to peaceful pursuits, Gov. Fletcher, in 1866, appointed a full coterie of county officers for this county, and at the first meeting of the County court Mr. Deatherage appeared in person with a package which he turned over to the court with the remark, “Here is Shannon County’s money that I kept during the war, count it and see if it is all there.” Upon investigation the package was found to contain about two thousands dollars, most of which was gold coin. He had hidden the money during the war times and kept it safely through that terrible and trying ordeal and when peace was proclaimed, at the first opportunity, restored it again to the people to whom it properly belonged.

For this noble act of honesty, he was again made County Treasurer, and held the position continuously until Dec. 31, 1872, when he turned it over to his successor to assume the office of Judge of the County Court, a position in which he continued for the six years succeeding; during this time he engaged in the mercantile business and at one time was considered the foremost merchant in the county.

His religious belief was that of the Missionary Baptist, the church in which he formerly held full membership. But aside from all creeds or beliefs, he was a moral, worthy, unassuming Christian-hearted gentleman, and dying left behind him a name free from reproach and a character well worthy of imitation. Although the last years of his life was spent in poverty, coupled with total blindness, he never lost faith in the mercy and goodness of an All Wise Providence.

His mortal remains were interred in the Eminence Cemetery. Reverend Whitehead of the C. P. Church conducted the obsequies. – Joshua Sholar

Abraham Marion DePriest - [07 Jul 1830 - 02 Jun 1891] - IN MEMORIAM - DIED:  At his residence at Birch Tree on the 2nd inst., A. M. DePriest, well and familiarly known to many citizens in this county. Mr. DePriest was born in Jefferson County, Illinois, July 7, 1830, and had almost reached his 61st milepost at the date of his demise. When quite a youth he removed from Illinois to Oregon County, this state, where he resided until after his marriage, when he located in what is now Birch Tree township, and erected the first dwelling and cleared the first farm in that part of the county, his nearest neighbor being a distance of 20 miles from his new home. He lived in that neighborhood until the commencement of the Civil War, when he espoused the cause of the Confederacy and went out to battle for his country, and served until the year 1863, [Lt, 4th MO Confederate Infantry] when he removed with his family to Illinois and remained there until the close of the rebellion, after which he returned to his old home and was elected Public Administrator in the year 1870, and removed to Eminence, where he was appointed County Clerk in February, 1871, by the resignation of Henry Bell, and served in that position until the first of January, 1874. He was then appointed Deputy Sheriff and Collector under L. J. Whitworth, which position he filled for four years, consecutively. His wife becoming unhealthy, Mr. DePriest sold out his possessions and traveled with her to various health resorts, but all to no avail, she died at West Plains in the spring of 1883. [Mary 'Polly' Huddleston, abt. 1830 - 1883].  In the summer of 1885 Mr. DePriest returned to Shannon County again and was elected Assessor in 1886 and re-elected in 1888, his position expiring two days prior to his death. Taking it all-in-all, Uncle Abe, as he was familiarly known, was one of the most prominent men that we have ever had in our county, not only as an official, but in many other particulars. He was one of the first men that helped to survey and locate lands in South Missouri, and engaged in selling land numbers to parties that made entries under the Graduation Act in this part of the state. At times he dealt largely in (live)stock, engaged in the mercantile business, kept hotel, and, in fact, followed almost all kinds of business and enterprises out of which he could earn a livelihood. Like many other men, Mr. DePriest had many misfortunes, but he always arose above them, and seemed to recognize no such word as 'fail'. In his social life he was kind and affable, possessing a generous and sympathetic heart, and it can be truly said of him that more people received charities at this hand than any other man that ever lived in our county. We cannot lift the veil and penetrate into the mysteries of the unknown, but we do believe that in spite of creeds and dogmas, that the noble, generous heart that warms into sympathy at the distresses of his fellow man, that shows its faith by its deeds of kindness and charity, has a purer, nobler realm of light and immortality in which to dwell eternally than those whose only hope is a theoretical creed based on superstition and fear and whose only idea of religion is the dread of a future punishment. It  might be well to mention that Mr. DePriest was living with his third wife, whom he leaves, together with two sons, two daughters, two brothers and one sister, to mourn his loss. He was a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellow societies and was buried by the honors of the last named fraternity in the family grave yard near his own home where rests his parents and other members of the family. His time on earth is ended. He has finished his work and rests in quietude and repose in the silent grave, from the vicissitudes and labor of a busy life. ~ The Current Wave, Winona, Thursday, June 11, 1891.

NOTE:  Abraham Marion DePriest was the son of Isaac Casey DePriest & Elizabeth Buffington. He is buried by his third wife at Brown-DePriest Cemetery near Birch Tree.

ELIZABETH JANE CAMPBELL GARDNER DEPRIEST - [23 May 1849 - 15 May 1915] - Mrs. Elizabeth J. DEPRIEST Dead - Victim of Heart Failure Drops Dead At Home While Alone - A Great Shock To People During the past several weeks we have recorded the deaths of so many of our oldest and best citizens that we have begun to wonder who will be next. This week it becomes our sorrowful duty to record the death of Mrs. Elizabeth DEPRIEST, whose death Tuesday caused a veil of gloom to settle over our little city. She had been suffering slightly with neuralgia for a few days but her condition was not considered serious at all until late Thursday afternoon when the report spread over our town that 'Aunt Sook', as she was familiarly known, had been found death in her home. Mr. and Mrs. Tommy DICKERSON occupy part of her residence and she and Mrs. DICKERSON went to town together about ten o'clock in the morning. Mrs. DICKERSON stopped at the hotel and did not return until about 5 o'clock in the afternoon and when she failed to see anything of Mrs. DEPRIEST she opened her door to look for her and found her lying dead on the floor of her bedroom. There was nothing to indicate any struggle and it seemed to be the unanimous opinion that death had resulted from a sudden attack of heart failure. An inquest was held, however, and a verdict of death from natural causes was rendered. It is not known what time of day her death occurred, but as she still had on her walking coat, it is generally supposed that she died shortly after arriving home from town about 10:30 or 11:00 o'clock. The deceased was about 66 years old, had been a resident of our town for probably longer than anyone left living here, and was a very highly respected citizen. She leaves three grown sons by her first husband whose name was E.F. GARDNER. They are Silas Campbell GARDNER, of near Winona; Ira GARDNER of Deerfield, Illinois; and Romeo GARDNER who is somewhere in North Dakota. The funeral will be held this afternoon under auspices of the Eastern Star Lodge of which she had been a long-time and honored member. Two of the sons, Campbell and Romeo are to be present at the funeral, we are informed.  Sources for this information: Shannon Herald, Birch Tree, Missouri.  Submitted by:  Gaycha Martens Mayhew Date: Sun May 13 11:21:00 2007.

NOTE: She married first Elijah Francisco Gardner. She married second Abraham 'Marion' DePriest abt. 1887. She is buried beside him at Brown-DePriest Cemetery.

C. C. DEWEESE - The Current Wave - March 7, 1901 - C. C. DeWeese, County Clerk of Texas County, died February 25th at Houston, Mo., of consumption. He was 31 years old and had been sick for the past year, and a few weeks ago resigned his office so that his wife could be appointed in his place. A sad feature of his death was that his oldest child, Maud, aged 7 years, died February 20th while the father was lingering on the brink of his grave. Mr. DeWeese was most favorably known as an official and citizen, and the entire community will mourn his loss.

George Washington DeWeese - Born 28 Jun 1852 at Butler Co KY, died 27 Jan 1901 Montier Shannon Co MO.  The Current Wave, January 31, 1901 - Home Happenings -  Geo. DeWeese, brother of Judge J. N. DeWeese, who was injured by a runaway team near Birch Tree last week, has since died. An obituary will appear next week.  (Obit not found)

HENRY BURGOYNE DEWEESE - Eldest son of Jasper Newton DeWeese & Seberry Nash. Born at Big Creek Shannon Co MO, Mar. 6, 1872; died Jun. 19, 1969 at Doctor's Hospital Poplar Bluff Butler Co MO, following an illness of eight weeks. His age was 97 years, 3 months, 13 days, having long outlived man's allotted span of three score and ten years. In early manhood he was united in marriage to Alice Hudson and to this marriage three children were born. On Feb. 2, 1904 he was united in marriage to Ida Powell, a marriage that lasted for nearly half a century, and to this union two children were born. His wife preceded him in death on July 19, 1950, and a son, Lloyd, in July, 1953. Surviving are sons Floyd of Anderson MO and Herald of Owosso MI; daughters Thelma Atkins of Winona and Freda Williams of Ellington, three daughters-in-law, one son-in-law, 20 grandchildren, 53 great grandchildren and 27 great-great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and a host of friends. He was a loving husband and father and good neighbor and friend. He followed the precept that to have a friend one must be a friend. Henry was known to practically everyone in Eminence as for the greater part of his life Shannon County was his home. For many years he engaged in farming at the DeWeese community east of Eminence. The last 12 years of his life he made his home with his daughter Freda at Ellington. Many years ago he accepted Christ as his Savior, was baptized and hence forward strove to always lead a Christian life. He frequently remarked that he was ready and willing to leave this life and had complete confidence that he would make Heaven his eternal home, there to be united with loved ones gone before, and that his passing should be no cause for grief to those loved ones he leaves here, as he felt he would be exchanging earthly crosses for a Heavenly crown. Paul tells us in Corinthians 5:1, 'For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the Heavens.' So while our hearts are saddened by his parting, we can yet rejoice that he is now safe in the arms of Jesus, never again to be troubled by the infirmities of age, nor by the cares and sorrows of this life. He was laid to rest in the New Eminence Cemetery under the able direction of Duncan Funeral Home. Pallbearers were his grandsons, Norman and Donald DeWeese, Charles McIntire, Fred, Bob and Rex Atkins. Submitted by Norma Myers Stevenson.

JASPER NEWTON DEWEESE - DEATH OF J. N. DEWEESE - He was buried at Munsell Chapel Cemetery. The funeral was conducted by the Eminence and Winona Odd Fellows. J. N. DeWeese is with us no more, he passed into the spirit world on Monday, July 8, 1907 at 4 pm, but leaves behind him the impression of a pure Christian life. Deceased was born in Butler Co KY on Oct. 23, 1848, and was 13 years of age at the commencement of the War Between the States, but did not participate in the struggle. He was yet a boy when the war ended and remained with his parents until 1869 when he came to Shannon County where he continued to reside until the time of his death. In 1871 he married Mrs. Seberry Nash, mother of one son, George Washington Nash, and to this union was born 9 children, 8 of whom are still living; one little girl named Anna died in infancy. The remaining 8 yet alive are all married, to wit: Henry DeWeese, Dora Williamson, Della Holland, Delia Henderson, L. N. DeWeese, William DeWeese, Charles DeWeese and Otilla Hicks. Mr. DeWeese was one of the best known citizens of Shannon County, and was very highly respected. In 1874 he was chosen as Associate Judge of the county court, a position which he filled with honor to himself and credit to his constituency. He was an energetic, enterprising man, kind to his family and obliging to his friends and neighbors, and in full possession of that generous hospitality peculiar to people of the south generally, and to Kentuckians in particular. He suffered long. Early in the seventies it was plainly seen that he was afflicted with cancer, and although everything was done that was known or could be heard of to check its ravages, all was of no avail; it increased with the increasing years until finally it sapped the foundation of his existence and he yielded to the inevitable and gave up his life. At an early age he professed God in a pardon of his sins and united with the M. E. Church and certainly lived a devout, holy and Christian life. Amidst dire afflictions he talked cheerfully and looked forward to a life of joy and peace beyond the vale of tears. In conversation when we met the last time, among other things along the line of now and the hereafter, he said 'Oh, my sufferings at times are great, but if we suffered an hundred years in this world, what is that in comparison to an eternity of bliss beyond the tomb? I am happy, so happy in the thought that I sometimes think it is sinful to worry over my afflictions.' He spoke in a low voice, earnestly and enthusiastically, yet in a calm and impassioned manner. We who are yet living will miss our departed friend, miss him in the daily avocation of life, miss him in our social circles, miss him when his advice and counsel is needed, but when we consider that our loss is his eternal gain, that he had exchanged a life of misery for a life of happiness, we should content ourselves and quietly submit to the will of Him who doeth all things well. To the wife, children and friends of the deceased, the Wave extends sympathy and condolence in this, their sad hour of grief and affliction. From The Current Wave, July 18, 1907. In Loving Memory of Dennis Dixon

God called Denny home on July 19, 2002; the day after his 45th birthday. He was a special son, brother, dad and friend. He loved God, family and life in general. I wrote this right after he passed away because this is the way I believe he would feel.

Remember me in winter, summer and spring

Remember me when the first robin sings

Remember me in the morning sunlight

Remember me when the moon shines each night

Remember me when you look at my child

My sons eyes, my two daughters smiles

When you look at my sister, brothers, mom and dad

Know I am thankful for all the love I had

Remember me but please don't be sad

Instead, remember all the fun we had

When all the family would gather together

Where we would laugh and tease each other

I loved my sister and my two brothers

We grew strong together with dad and mother

And my children they were my life you see

When I look at them, I see a part of me

Remember when you think of me

I'm in Heaven and sorrow free

I loved my God and served him with zest

He took me home, remember, he knows best

And when you too have run the race

I'll be waiting for you with a smile on my face

And we will walk together hand in hand

With Jesus, never to be parted again

Yes, remember me, but don't be sad

I'm thankful for all the years that I had

I know my picture you often view

Remember I'll always love all of you

Denny, there's no way to count all the tears that I have shed. We all love and miss you very much and not a day passes that I fail to thank God for allowing us the pleasure of your love – Mom

She donated her time to programs such as Share Your Christmas and the Missouri Stream Team, and was involved in the Cub Scout program for over 20 years. Donna touched the lives and hearts of so many people and will be forever loved and missed by all that had the great fortune of crossing paths with her. Billy Joe Downs - in His infinite wisdom, God has called home our loved one, Billy Joe DOWNS. He was born to William E. and Lois (CAMPBELL) DOWNS on August 19, 1948; his age was 56 years, 8 months, and 15 days. DR. JOHN F. DUNCAN

17 Jan 1948 - 30 Jul 2015

John Duncan always liked to surprise people by saying he grew up in a funeral home. But it is true, when he was born, on January 17, 1948, his parents Joe and Helen Duncan were the second generation of Duncan Funeral Home owners, and John and his younger brother, JR, spent much of their young lives in the back of that beautiful rock building in Mountain View, Missouri. John was a student leader in Mountain View Schools, graduating as the Salutatorian of his high school class in 1966. As a high school senior, John felt impressed that God was leading him into full-time Christian service, so he chose to attend Oklahoma Baptist University, and graduated with a church music degree. His senior year, he served as President of the Bison Glee Club, and went on OBU’s European Study Tour. On that tour he got acquainted with his future wife, Jennifer Eighmy. They married the following year, in 1970. John and Jennifer lived briefly in Dallas, Texas where John attended mortuary school, so that he could join the family business. During their years in Mountain View, John also served as music director of the First Baptist Church there. In 1974, John and Jennifer received what they considered the greatest miracle and blessing of their lives, when twin sons Jay Matthew and Jeffrey Mark were added to their family. When the boys were seven, John again felt a calling of God’s spirit to become a pastor. The family moved to Ft. Worth, Texas for John to attend Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He graduated in 1985 and was called to pastor First Baptist Church of Cassville, Missouri. John served there for 23 years and earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from Denver Seminary. During these years, two daughters-in-law, Jennifer Lawson and Christa Milligan, and four granddaughters, Grace, Emma, Kate and Meredith were added to the family. One of his greatest joys was being called 'Granddad'. In 2008, a change came for John and Jennifer when they felt clearly led to leave the Cassville church and serve, through the International Mission Board, as pastor of 'The Gathering' in Chiang Mai, Thailand. While there, they learned to love the Thai people and culture, and began leading Missouri groups to minister there through short-term mission trips. These mission efforts continue, every summer, even now. Upon returning from service in Thailand, John was called to pastor Arnhart Baptist Church in Purdy, Missouri, where he served happily and well until his death on July 30, 2015, at age 67.
