HERVEY H. 'NOKE' JONES -
Eldest son of Moses and Sarah (Boldin)
Jones. He was born February 13, 1904 at West Eminence, Mo. and departed
this life January 1, 1986 at the age of 81 years, 10 months, and 18 days. He was
united in marriage to Marie Gore October 9, 1923, and to this union three
children were born, Kenneth of Granite City, Ill.; Norma Colyott of Eminence,
Mo.; and Elaine Stringer of Union, Mo. He accepted Christ as his savior May 28,
1933 and was buried with his Lord in baptism June 4, 1933 in the Jacks Fork
River. His true devotion to God and his church was exemplified by his
daily life and his relationship with his fellow man. 'Love Thy Neighbor'
were not meaningless words to Noke, but the sentiment of an upright heart, and
the practice of his life. He was one of the earliest members of the West
Eminence Christian Church and served as one of its elders for many years. Except
for a brief period during World War II, when he worked in a defense plant in St.
Louis, Noke lived his entire life in Shannon County, never living more than a
few miles from the place of his birth. He will be remembered by many as 'Park
Supt.' at Alley Spring, a position he held for nearly a quarter of a century.
He received an award from the State Park Board for having the longest,
continuous service of any employee, up to that time. His personal touch
can be seen at the park, even today as evidenced by many of the shade trees,
foot trails, etc. The 'Old Red Mill', known nationwide as one of
Missouri's most historic landmarks, was painted 'red' for the first time by Noke
in early 1946, simply because of war shortages, red was the only color of paint
available at that time. It has been known from that day to this as the
'Old Red Mill'. Hervey was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister,
Fabrus; and a brother, Frank. He is survived by his wife, Marie; his
mother-in-law, Sadie Wilson; one son, Kenneth of Granite City, Ill.; two

Burnham, also of Eminence. Other survivors include three sisters, Inez
Stevens, Hazel Chilton and Louise Hines; one brother, Arnold (Pug) Jones; two
brothers-in-law, Ish Chilton and John Hines, all of Eminence. There are 10
grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends
who mourn his passing. Funeral services were conducted January 4 at 10:00 a.m.

MARY
'SUSIE' MCAFEE CARR JONES - Born Dec. 4, 1913 near Shawnee, Shannon Co
MO, passed away Jul. 9, 2008 at Stockton Nursing Home, Stockton MO, at age 94.
Her parents, George and Fannie (Corder) McAfee were the parents of eight
children, Lora, Elsie, Nova, Gertrude, Susie, Walter, Gladys and Kenneth. She
was preceded in death by her husband, Thornton Jones; her parents, and all of
her sisters and brothers. Most of Susie's life was lived near Eminence, Shannon
County. She graduated from Eminence High School in 1932 and was married to
Gerald T. Carr on Apr. 19, 1935. To this union three children were born, Darlene
Sue, Jerry Gale and Roger Eugene Carr. After a divorce in 1946 she and the
children moved from St. Louis back to Eminence. Susie married Thornton 'Fodder'
Jones Jun. 6, 1949. They were married for 44 years before his death Jan. 17,
1994. They lived just west of Eminence all of their married life. After her
marriage to Thornton she worked at Angelica Uniform Factor at Eminence for
several years. Even when she was working she still found time to have a big
garden, to can and bake. When it someone's birthday, she'd bake whatever kind of
cake they wanted. Birthdays were always special to Susie and she enjoyed her
90th surprise birthday party here at the church in 2003 so very much. She always
had a smile on her face and a kind word for everyone. She always said 'If you
can't say anything good about a person, don't say anything at all' and she lived
by those words. She loved little children, whether they were her grandchildren,
great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren or someone else's - she loved
them all. She also loved being outdoors working in her flowers or just walking
through the woods to the river. Some of her fondest memories were of picking
dogwoods in the woods, going hunting with Thornton and going to the deer camp to
visit with everyone. Susie was save and baptized when she was a young girl and
remained a faithful Christian until the end. She was a member of the West
Eminence Christian Church and missed all her church family when she went to live
with her daughter in 2002. She had attended the First Christian Church in El
Dorado Springs faithfully until her health declined. She still enjoyed her 'own'
church newsletter from home that she received by mail. Mary Susie Jones is
survived by her children and their spouses, Darlene and Quentin Walsh of
El Dorado Springs MO, Jerry and Carolyn Carr of Eminence MO, and Roger and Linda
Carr of Napa CA; eleven grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, eleven
great-great grandchildren, a special cousin, Jewell Powell Dix, who was like a
sister to her, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was loved by all who
knew her and will be sadly missed. We know that 'our loss is Heaven's gain.'

Christian Church with Rev. Glen Hampton officiating. Interment was in New

attended the local schools. As a youth he was an enrollee of the CCC camps,
serving near Winona and in Idaho. When he was 18 he enlisted in the Army,
serving with the Infantry in the Aleutians until his discharge at the end of the
war in 1945. Since then he worked in California and in more recent years for the
Valley Farms Dairy in St. Louis. Last Friday he served at pallbearer for
his aunt, Bertha Purcell, who was buried in the Akers Cemetery. He had visited
with his mother, Mrs. Pearly Maggard, at the home near Akers. He was returning
to his work in St. Louis when he stopped at Cuba to rest before continuing his
drive. He was found the next day, another victim of the deadly carbon monoxide
gas. Russell was a serious quiet turned man, well thought of by those who
knew him and attentive to his mother’s special condition. His days were too
short—dying at the age of 41 years, 9 months and 3 days. He leaves an older
brother, Claude, of Nevada, Missouri; his mother, Mrs. Pearly Maggard, and a
step-father, Dee Maggard, of the home at Akers. Burial was at the Cedar
Grove Cemetery in Salem with Vincent W. Bucher, Pastor of Shannondale, in charge
and services at the Spencer Funeral Home.

ELLA 'MAE' JULIAN -
Was an extraordinary woman who lived life with gusto. Mae
was born in Green County, MO, on August 24, 1912, to Elizabeth Ann (CORBET)
JULIAN and Charles Harvey JULIAN. Her roots were deep in Shannon Co. where she
spent a lot of time on the rivers, hunting and fishing with an eye always open
for arrow heads or any Indian artifact. Mae left us on February 5, 2002, at St.
Francis Hospital in Mountain View, MO, at the age of 89 years. Ella Mae's dear
sister, Pauline Ava (JULIAN) FREEMAN {91} is at their home in Eminence, the only
mother Ella Mae had ever known. Their mother, Elizabeth, had passed away when
Mae was two years old. Pauline was Mae's sister, mother, and friend. She will
miss her dearly. In 1943 Mae moved to St. Louis, MO and went to work in a small
arms plant, then known as Carter Carburetors, where she worked for 30 years. She
came home to Shannon Co. every chance she got, building her home where she would
live after retirement. Mae traveled extensively and visited every state except
Alaska and Hawaii. She also visited Canada and Mexico. Many may remember Ella
Mae from auctions around the area or the Senior Center, where she was a member
of the 'Young at Heart's Club.' She was also a member of 'The Wild Horse
League'. She loved animals and was always taking in strays that came along. She
was an avid gardener, bird-watcher and people person. Mae never met a stranger.
Her motto should have been 'Let me live in a house by the side of the road and
be a friend to man'. She believed in The Word, and lived in The Word. She was a
giver. We will always miss her and remember her smile. Interment was in the New
Eminence Cemetery next to her father, Charlie. Sources for this
