Johann George Schneider (Snider) came to this country from Germany in the 1700s. He married a Ms. Mary Pence/Bence and settled in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. Descendants have migrated and settled in places like Blount County, TN, Georgia, Alabama, Carter and Shannon County Missouri, and westward to WA, OR, and CA. Some of the earliest settlers in Pike Creek Valley or Carter County Missouri were James Snider, Michael Snider, John Snider, Robert Neal and James Kinnard. All these came to the valley in the 1830s.
John Walker Snider (1798-1857) , brother James Snider (1808-1896), and a sister Sarah "Sally" Snider Kinnard, (children of George Snider and Mary Walker or Monroe County, TN) their uncle, Michael Snider
(1777-1858), and cousin Samuel Irvin Snider (1831-1911) were all descendants of Johann George Schneider, and all migrated from the Blount/Monroe County TN area to the Pike Creek area of what is now Shannon and Carter County Missouri. Closely related families of the area include Kinnard, Turley, Neal, Hudson, Cusick, Davidson, Thomas, Dawson, McCormick, Legg, Greene, Burrows, Stineett, Windes, Montgomery, Smith, Oliver, Locke, Reed and Hedgepeth, just to name a few.
James Snider, became a farmer and blacksmith but later, became a self-made medical doctor and was a very useful citizen. He died on his homestead at the ripe old age of 92 years.
John Snider settled on the farm now owned by Mary Pennington McDowell and husband. The farm is located about one mile below Fremont in Pike Creek Valley, not far from his brother James place, and uncle Michael Mike Sniders place.
Mike Snider, uncle to James and John, is said to have moved back to Tennessee for a while, but the story below says differently:
A few years after he arrived, Michael Snider became dissatisfied and was determined to move back to Tennessee. Among other preparations he took four horses and a wagon to his nephew, James, who was a blacksmith and had his wagon repaired and horses shod. This took two days time and the night before he started home a heavy rain fell on the headwaters of Pike Creek on which they both lived. Mike lived several miles below his nephew James place. He started home and the creek had risen several feet but he drove into it. The horses were washed down until the wagon lodged against a tree. Mike cut the harness from his saddle horse and it swam out with him but the other three drowned. As he was not able to buy more horses, so he could not move as he intended. About a year afterwards he made the trip back to Tennessee on horseback. and visited his old friends. He said it was all for the best that he was prevented from moving as he would not have been satisfied and the move would have cost him more than the price of the three horses that he lost as he would have moved back to Missouri again.

Numerous cousins and relatives of the Sniders still live in the MO area, while many of us are scattered about the country. The Snider and Allied Family Heritage Reunion will allow you to explore family stories like these, share some common and not so common family histories, meet some cousins, and to enjoy the Missouri Ozarks in the most beautiful time of year. Plan to bring family albums, pictures, stories, and to have a great time.
