EDWARD G. GRANDSTAFF – Died Nov 15, 1932. Edward Garfield GRANDSTAFF was struck by an automobile and instantly killed on State Highway 10, about a half mile west of Perry KS, Tuesday morning. GRANDSTAFF had started from home on the TRANT farm, at about 8 o'clock, and was walking along the highway, and a car driven by W. E. ELLIS, traveling in the same direction, struck him, GRANDSTAFF's body was hurled to the pavement. At the time a snow storm was raging and it is thought GRANDSTAFF had his ears muffled and did not hear the approaching car. After striking GRANDSTAFF, ELLIS stopped his car and hailed other cars to have them notify doctors and officers. He assisted in every way possible and stayed in Perry until he was exonerated by the coroner. ELLIS's version of the accident was that he saw GRANDSTAFF walking east and at about the center of the concrete slab. He appeared to have his hands in his pockets. Ellis blew his horn first and then blew a whistle attached to the exhaust pipe. GRANDSTAFF continued walking and in an instant before the car reached him GRANDSTAFF turned his head to look at the car and at the same time apparently stepped in front of it. There were no witnesses. The body was taken to KUHL's store and Sheriff AULL notified. Upon arriving here the coroner was called. He found that the accident was unavoidable and Ellis exonerated. GRANDSTAFF 's neck and both legs were broken. The remains were taken to PEEBLERS undertaking parlor in Topeka. NOT AN OBITUARY - Veteran Perry bus driver ready to roll on final run. by Jeff Collins, J-W Staff writer Perry--At 3 p.m. sharp, the 13 buses all rolled away from the bus barn and headed for the entrance of Perry-Lecompton High School. Students soon filed out of the school's glass doors and began mounting the shiny yellow busses. After a few minutes, they pulled away, three of them going directly to the Perry Elementary School.  Again a stream of students filed on board. Next door, an electric clock flashed the time and temperature (46 degrees at 3:15 p.m.) as about 15 grade schoolers piled into USD 343 Bus No. 7. 'Hi, Cotton,' one dark-haired girl said to her driver as climbed aboard. The driver, M.E. 'Cotton' Grandstaff, interrupted his reply to a reporter's question to return the salutation. About 55 students ride on Grandstaff's bus, out of a total of 600 bused daily in the Perry-Lecompton school district, 13 miles northwest of Lawrence. And at age 62, the slight 5-foot-11-inch man knows his charges well.  He's been driving a bus for 36 years in Perry and considers the children he chauffeurs between school and home to be the most precious cargo a driver can haul. 'They're children.  You love 'em and you can't replace 'em,' he said, explaining the reason for his attitude. But beginning Monday, a new driver will take over Grandstaff's route, and 'Cotton' will hang up his driving gloves.  After 36 years on the route from Perry to Grantville, Grandstaff will make his final run on Friday. 'I started driving in October 1945,' he said during a recent interview, dressed in his habitual overalls and baseball cap.  Now the time has come for him to retire from driving, he said. 'I'm going on 37 years.  That's long enough,' he simply said. But parents, students, district officials and fellow bus drivers won't let 'Cotton' slip away unnoticed. Last month, the Perry-Lecompton School board designated Friday as  'Cotton Grandstaff Day,' and the district is planning a fair degree of pomp and circumstance to go with it. For example, parents and students at Perry and Grantville elementary schools are awarding him plaques in honor of his years of service, according to Shepherd. And fellow drivers plan to decorate his bus and hold a small get-together Friday morning after they run their routes, the superintendent said. A native of Winona, Mo., Grandstaff moved to Perry with his family in 1924. By then it already was 'Cotton'-- a nickname inspired by the white hair he had at age 6. The white hair of Grandstaff's youth eventually took on a darker shade but it recently regained its white hue.  But not because he finds today's youth exasperating. Although Grandstaff and his wife never had any children of their own, Grandstaff claims that 'most all of them (who ride his bus) feel like they're mine, really.' He started driving a bus after returning from World War II, where he served as a Marine in the South Pacific.  He took the driving job, he said, to supplement his job as a service station employee. When he first started, I hauled everybody west of Perry,' he said.  'I made two trips in the morning and two at night.' He since has seen buses get bigger--and the heaters get better--and he has seen his driver's pay increase from $70 a month to its current monthly level of $462. But he never got tired of the challenge, he said.  'I don't mean to brag, but for me the snow, the drifts, never got too deep,' he said.  'You look back there and you got 60 kids, and the roads are slick, you know what kind of responsibility you got too.' Fellow drivers, who must manage in all kinds of weather without the benefit of radios, said that they relied on Grandstaff when the weather got rough. 'We're going to miss him,' said Jane Dunnaway, one of two Perry drivers who works with Grandstaff on the Grantville route.  'He keeps track of us, and he keeps us on time.' Another driver, Teresa Tyron, also of Perry, added, 'All the kids will tell you he's the best driver there is.' Shepherd said that because Grandstaff was so reliable and got along so well with the students, the district will have a hard time finding a replacement that can fill his shoes. 'Anybody who worked with us that long and is a good employee is always going to be missed,' he said.  'It's never easy to replace somebody that's done a good job for you.' But Carl Kester, an eighth-grader from Rt. 1, Grantville, may have summed it up best. 'I don't want to get rid of him,' he said.  'I'd say he's about our best bus driver. 'My Mother's Hands - I looked at her hands, so wrinkled and old, I thought as I looked, what a strange story they told. Of labor and toil, and service and love, she had given to all, like an angel above. And I thought of the time she had rocked me to sleep, her hand soft as down, as she patted my cheek. And of the many wonderful things she had done, e're the span of her noble life as run. They seemed to portray that for which she stands, there's nothing as lovely as my mother's hands.'  'For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, for whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16.' On behalf of the family we wish to express their gratitude for your kindness evidenced in thought and deed and for your presence at this memorial service.
