STEPHEN THOMAS 'STEVIE' CAMPBELL JR. - Date of Death: April 3, 1988.  Murder Charges Filed…..WINONA GRADUATE VICTIM OF SHOTGUN SHOOTING SUNDAY Winona residents who heard the news were shocked and saddened on Easter by the shooting death of 21 year-old Stephen T. CAMPBELL, Jr. early Sunday morning. First degree murder charges were filed Sunday against Joseph W. FARRIS, 28, of Willow Springs. FARRIS, who is being held in Howell County Jail with bond set at $100,000, was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday, April 5, in Shannon County Associate Circuit Court. According to Shannon County prosecuting attorney Winston BUFORD, the incident occurred about 3 a.m. on Elm Street near the northwest corner of the ball field in Winona. BUFORD said FARRIS had been driving around Winona when he encountered Campbell and four or five of his friends at the scene. 'Words were exchanged,' BUFORD said, adding that FARRIS then left and returned shortly with a shotgun. BUFORD said FARRIS fired one shot from his vehicle window. 'FARRIS pulled up and apparently an argument broke out between all of the people there,' said Shannon County Sheriff, Clinton ‘Butter’ REEVES. 'As a group, they argued back and forth. It wasn’t just between CAMPBELL and FARRIS,' REEVES stressed. According to REEVES, one witness reported that FARRIS had said, 'I’ll go get help and return,' before the shooting occurred. CAMPBELL was reportedly shot in the left rib-cage area by a single-shot .12 gauge shotgun. REEVES said it was unclear what the argument was over and that several eyewitnesses were being interviewed as the investigation continued on Monday. BUFORD and REEVES concurred that FARRIS had gone to a relative’s home in Winona to get the shotgun. Winona police officers arrested FARRIS at about 8 a.m. on Sunday as he was walking south on Hw. 17. He had apparently walked approximately 10 miles after overturning his vehicle on Texas County Rte. W. BUFORD said FARRIS took officers to the shotgun, which was found about 370 feet from his overturned vehicle according to REEVES. CAMPBELL, a popular recent graduate of Winona High School, was living in West Plains. The son of Steve and Barbara NORRIS CAMPBELL, of Winona, he is also survived by his wife, Kristie PERKINS CAMPBELL and daughter, Stephanie CAMPBELL, and brother Bradley CAMPBELL. CHARLES TRUMAN CHILTON - Died June 4, 1892 - THE CURRENT WAVE - SHANNON COUNTY MISSOURI - JUNE 4, 1892 KILLED IN SELF-DEFENSE PERRY ANDRES KILLS C. T. CHILTON AT WINONA THE RESULT OF AN OLD FEUD Three Shots Through the Heart Seal the Doom of a Well Known Shannon County Man - Andres Exonerated by the Coroner's Jury. Son-in Law Kills Father-in-Law On Saturday just about half past 1 o'clock p.m., Perry Andres shot and killed Charles Chilton at Winona, this county. The nature of the quarrel as well as can be learned, was about as follows; Sometime last summer the only daughter of Chilton's married Andres contrary to the will of her parents, and since that time Chilton and Andres have been enemies. Early in the morning Charlie went over to Winona to the election, and learning that Andres was there, imbibed freely and threatened the life of his son-in-law. Parties knowing the ill-feeling existing between them managed to keep Andres away from Chilton until in the afternoon. Andres went into Church & Kissel's store to transact some business, and Chilton met him as he was coming out of the door, and accosted with 'Where is my girl,' to which Andres replied, 'She's at home!' 'God damn you, I'm going to kill you,' retorted Chilton, and smiting his action to his word threw his pistol on Andres and fired. Andres, by a quick movement, struck Chilton's arm just as he Chilton pulled the trigger, knocking the pistol to one side, thus avoiding the charge, and quickly drawing his own weapon, a 34-caliber, placed it against Chilton's breast and fired three times in rapid succession. Chilton turned away, walked ten or twelve feet and fell on the sidewalk and expired without speaking, but still holding his pistol in his right hand with a firm grasp. Andres was promptly arrested and tried before Justice Evans and acquitted on the ground of justifiable homicide, as it was shown by the evidence that he acted in self defense. The corpse was removed home, which is about five miles north of Winona, the same night soon after the post mortem examination, and interred the next day in the family grave yard on the old Chilton farm, about one-half mile north of Eminence. Charlie was well known in this community, having been born and reared in this neighborhood. He married Miss Josie Singleton, daughter of the late Lyle Singleton, in 1869 or 1870, and has two children, the eldest a young man in his 21st year, and the youngest a daughter, the wife of the man who murdered him. Mrs. Chilton has been in delicate health for several years and it is feared by her many friends that she will not survive the shock. We were well acquainted with deceased, having known him for the last twenty-two years. He was kind and affable in manner, and affectionate to his wife and children. He has a host of relatives and friends, with whom we deeply sympathize in their sad hour of affliction. Murders are getting to be common occurrences in Shannon county nowadays. We have had no less than ten or twelve in the last ten years, and crime is almost a daily on the increase. This is a sad state of affairs, and steps should be taken to prevent a repetition of such fearful tragedies.  Sources for this information: Current Wave.  Submitted by:  Carrie Edgar.  Date: Sat Jul 7 21:55:04 2007.

JAMES COKER - In Memory of My Husband and Our Father, James Coker, Who Passed Away March 14, 1951.

A dear one from us is gone, A voice we loved is stilled. A place is vacant in our homes, Which never can be filled. You are gone but not forgotten,
Your smiling face we see. You’re not dead to us who love you, But will live Eternally. Our hearts still ache with sadness, Our eyes shed many a tear.
God only knows how much we miss you, But we shall see you in a few short years. In that beautiful land some day, That home so bright and fair,
Where there will be no more sorrow, And no parting days up there. Jim, our hearts are lonely; We miss you every day. We’ll meet you there, Dear Daddy, Where tears are wiped away. By Laura Coker, Children and Grandchildren.

JAMES COKER  -- In Memoriam note – James Coker, died March 14, 1951

Five years ago today, dear one, You left this world so drear. Your soul took flight on wings of night, And left us lonely here. Your last handclasp, I feel it yet, And teardrops dim my eyes. Though years may go, we’ll not forget, And our lonely heart oft sighs. We know you’ve safely landed home,
Where the tempter cannot snare. Your pain and suffering is gone, Safe in God’s loving care. Some day we’ll meet on heaven’s shore, There never more to part. In heaven no tears are ever known Or lonely broken hearts. We’ll say good-night for a little while, Then say good morning there.
For every tear there’ll be a smile In that land where all is fair.  Sadly missed by Laura Coker and Children

He married Martha Jane MCFALL of Wayne Co TN about 1868 in TN. This hasty departure was a result of the fall of Ft. Donaldson and Ft. Henry. The company was probably assigned to the 54th Tennessee Infantry Regiment as it was accepted by the same Confederate States mustering officer at the time and place as companies known to have been assigned to the 54th. It was probably company 'D' or 'F'; which one has not been determined. The remnants of the 54th were subsequently merg
