Uncle Jesse LAXTON departed this life on the 10th inst., at the residence of his son-in-law, Judge John P. NORTON, age 85 years, 2 months and 8 days. Mr. LAXTON was born in Anderson Co TN and was married in 1839 to Miss Nancy DUNCAN. In 1855 he moved to this county and resided here the greater portion of the time until the date of his death. In politicis Mr. LAXTON was an ardent Democrat of the Jeffersonian school. He was a member of the Christian Church; a quiet, mild mannered man, honest, truthful and reliable and very unoffensive. His afflictions were great and he was confined to his bed for several months, but during his illness he never lost his hope in Christ, and died in the triumph of a living faith.
His wife preceded him to the grave several months, having died on the 2nd of last August, aged 79 years. She had formerly belonged to the Methodist Church but later on joined the Christian Church and remained a faithful member until her death. She had been a sufferer for the last 20 years and was confined to her bed the greater portion of her time, being unable to sit up during the period named. Her affliction was rheumatism and her suffering intense, but she bore it all with great fortitude and looked forward with the hope of a blessed life beyond this veil of tears. Only two children survive their parents: Mrs. Sarah WHITWORTH and Mrs. John P. NORTON.
Side by side the old folks are sleeping in the family burial grounds on Little Shawnee Creek.
