Heath Thomas Herbst was born January 22, 1986 at Creve Coeur, Missouri, to Stephen and Donita Barkley Herbst. He passed away on Tuesday, September 21, 2010, at his brother’s home in Shawnee, Kansas, at the age of 24 years, 8 months.

He is preceded in death by his grandfathers, Don Barkley and Clarence Herbst, and an uncle, Billy Joe Downs. He is survived by his mother, Donita Barkley, of Shawnee, Kansas; his father, Dr. Stephen Herbst, of Van Buren, Missouri; brothers & sisters-in-law, Jay and Tracey Simpson and Wes and Tina Herbst, all of Shawnee, Kansas, and Andy and Jenna Herbst, of Oahu, Hawaii; nephews Garen and Gabriel Herbst; nieces Lina Herbst, Kara and Abigail Simpson; grandmothers Lois Barkley, of Winona, Missouri, and Donna Harpe, of Palm Coast, Florida. Also surviving are uncles and aunts John and Vickie Barkley, of Winona, Missouri; Terry and Mary Lou Barkley, of Rolla, Missouri; Gary and Shirley Barkley, of Winona, Missouri; Linda and Rick Smith, of St. Louis, Missouri; Brenda and John Snyder, of Robertsville, Missouri; Doree and Todd Vanscoy, of Rolla, Missouri; Denise and Jay Hartz, of St. Louis, Missouri; Tonya and Waylon Long, of Anchorage, Alaska; and Karen Giles, of Webster Groves, Missouri, as well as several great aunts and uncles, many cousins, and special friends.

Heath’s passions were gardening and fishing, and he excelled at both. He was an artist and loved sketching and drawing. He had plans to become a minister, and found his joy in all these activities as long as he was able.

Heath became sick in early childhood with a debilitating and ultimately fatal illness. He tried to overcome the obstacles in his path and he fought a good fight. He accepted Jesus as his savior early in life and was ready to go when his time came. His suffering is over. His spirit will live on in our hearts forever.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, September 25, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. at the Horner Church on Rocky near Winona, Missouri, Danny & Janet Kile officiating. Eulogy by Michelle Shedd and Jayana DeWolf. A graveside Native American ceremony was conducted by Heath’s father, Dr. Stephen Herbst. Burial of cremains were at Horner Cemetery. A second memorial service was held on Tuesday, September 28, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. at the Cedar Ridge Christian Church, Lackman & 87th Street Parkway, Lenexa, Kansas; Rev. Scott Jones, John Duma and Dennis Stanchik officiating. Eulogy by Rob Dambacher.
