Local matters: John Barkley, living 3 mi so of Bartlett, was shot in the arm and hip Monday night by some unknown person. He had gone to the woodpile to get some pine when the shot was fired from the brush. It is not known who made this cowardly attempt to take Mr. Barkley’s life, but a man named Ben Kirby is suspicioned. About 2 yrs ago Barkley testified against Kirby in a counterfeiting case and Kirby made his threat that he would kill Barkley after his release from the penitentiary to which he had been sentenced. Kirby was released recently.
