THURSDAY, JANUARY 7, 1915: JASPER MYERS SHOT DEAD. POINEER MEETS DEATH AT HANDS OF WINONA YOUTH WHO IS NOW IN JAIL. About 9:00 on Wed. evening news came over the wire to the effect that Jasper MYERS of Sycamore had been shot dead at the hands of John "Rip" VANWINKLE. It seems that young VANWINKLE had been paying court to a step-daughter of Mr. MYERS, rather against the wishes of Mr. MYERS, who took a 22 rifle and went to the room to order VANWINKLE to leave, when VANWINKLE shot Mr. Myers four times in the breast, death resulting instantly. Mr. MYERS was a pioneer citizen, some 65 years of age (68), highly respected throughout the county, and the sad death is deplorable. He leaves to mourn his loss 2 daughters (Emma JULIAN and Sarah SADDLER), 1 son;(Frank MYERS) and numerous grandchildren by his first wife, besides his widow and son (Arie MYERS), with whom he was living at the time of the shooting. VANWINKLE at once surrendered to the authorities and will likely get a hearing at Circuit Court next week. William Jasper MYERS (4/1847-1/6/1915), burial at Munsell Cemetery, Shannon Co. MO.
