Shannon County was organized January 29, 1841 from Ripley and Washington counties. The county is named for George Shannon of the Lewis & Clark Expedition. The county seat is at Eminence. Shannon County has the Current and Jack's Fork rivers running through it. It is also home of some of Missouri's prettiest live springs - Alley Spring, Round Spring, Welch Spring, Pulltite Spring and others,
all spectacular in their scenic beauty. We are proud to offer many popular tourist attractions such as Rocky Falls and the Peck Ranch State Wildlife Management Area, the Irish Wilderness in neighboring Carter County, abundant camping and canoeing opportunities, float trips, hiking, trail rides, swimming and picnics.

The first Shannon County courthouse burned during the Civil War in 1863, and again in 1871 and 1938.
The recorder's office burned in 1893. There are records still available for the following:
Recorder of Deeds: Index to deeds, 1859-1887; Deed records 1871-1892;
Marriage Records and Index 1881 - 1921.
Clerk of Circuit Court: Index to Circuit Court Records - No dates;
Circuit Court Records 1872 - 1915; Index to tax suits, 1880 - 1932;
Clerk of Probate Court: Index to Probate Records, 1869 - 1911;
Probate Records, 1880 - 1904; Administrators/Executors Docket, 1875 - 1896;
Inventories appraisements and sale bills, 1876 - 1899; Settlement Records, 1876 - 1891;
Will Records, 1907 - 1918.
Additionally, some land records prior to 1872 may be in Ironton, Iron County, Missouri.
